All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

ALL WE LIKE SHEEP
“Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions,
he was bruised for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that made us whole,
and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned everyone to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.“

Isaiah 53.4-6
Christianity regards this prophecy of the suffering servant as applying uniquely to Jesus Christ and his atoning death on the cross. On the other hand Jewish interpretation holds the servant to be Israel, or the righteous in Israel, whose suffering of exile and persecution is atonement for the sins of the nations–especially polytheism. Inasmuch as the church as the body of Christ also suffers and sacrifices to bring salvation to the world, Christians can also draw a second sense of this passage as enunciating this wider application to all believers.
