Body and Soul

Topic: Immanence & Transcendence

From the time I was a young child, God talked about this to me. The only way I can describe it is that you are human and you have a human body, and you also have a soul. Your soul is that spark of light of God and that connects you to God, so God is both within you and out there, as well. That spark is so tiny, but it’s also so enormous at the same time—I can’t explain it.

Even though the body and the soul are separate, as you connect more spiritually to your soul, they come together and intertwine…  That spark of light of God becomes intertwined with the human being completely. We become one. We’re no longer separate. We are one.

Lorna Byrne

Lorna Byrne, born on March 25, 1953, in Dublin, Ireland, is a spiritual teacher and bestselling author known for her lifelong ability to see and communicate with angels. Growing up in Kilmainham and Ballymun, she faced challenges such as financial hardships and severe dyslexia, which made traditional learning difficult. Despite these obstacles, her vivid angelic encounters shaped her unique spiritual perspective, even as they set her apart from her community. These early experiences became the basis for the spiritual insights she later shared with a global audience.

In 1976, Byrne married Joe, a relationship she believed was divinely guided. They lived near Maynooth, County Kildare, and had four children. After Joe’s passing in 2000, Byrne felt called to share her connection with the angelic realm through her writing. Her first book, Angels in My Hair, became a bestseller, followed by others like A Message of Hope from the Angels. Written with the aid of speech recognition software, her works have been translated into over 30 languages, reaching readers in more than 50 countries with messages of love and guidance.

Today, Byrne continues her spiritual and philanthropic work, including founding the Lorna Byrne Children’s Foundation to support charities for children in need. Her retreat center, Sanctuary, in Kilfane Demesne, Ireland, promotes mindfulness and interfaith dialogue. Named one of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People in the World, Byrne inspires many through her books, teachings, and commitment to fostering peace and unity.

Lorna Byrne

Theme: Everyday Divinity

About This Lorna Byrne Quotation [Commentary]

Lorna Byrne describes the soul as “that spark of light of God,” the part of us that “connects you to God.” From childhood, she was shown this truth directly—that “you are human and you have a human body, and you also have a soul.” This soul is not separate from divinity but reveals that “God is both within you and out there, as well.” In these words, Byrne presents the divine as immediately accessible, not only transcendent but present within each person.

She goes on to describe the soul’s mystery: “so tiny, but it’s also so enormous at the same time—I can’t explain it.” Holding both qualities, the soul exists beyond measure, quietly present within the human being. Byrne explains that “even though the body and the soul are separate,” something begins to shift as a person “connect[s] more spiritually” to their soul. The two “come together and intertwine,” leading to a change in perception and experience. What once seemed divided—the human and the divine—begins to unify.

This movement toward unity is, for Byrne, not symbolic but real. “That spark of light of God becomes intertwined with the human being completely. We become one.” In this light, everyday divinity is not something to be sought outside ourselves but recognized within. Byrne’s words offer an invitation to live with greater awareness of this oneness, not as an ideal but as something already present, waiting to be seen and received.

Additional Quotations from Lorna Byrne

“And to me, the only way I can say is that acknowledge you have a soul and realize that your soul is pure love. It can’t be contaminated. The world has been telling you for I don’t know how long that your soul can be contaminated. It can’t. And it’s like reach in and, in a sense, allow yourself to touch it. And know that you’re pure love. And know in a sense that—how would I say this? Love yourself. I often tell people go and give yourself a hug and say well done. Don’t try to be someone else, because you are unique and perfect. You are who you are meant to be.”

“Your soul is perfect; when your soul is free of your body it can travel through the universe to places you could never even imagine. How can I help you to understand how wonderful this feeling is? There is no way to express it; no way to tell you, unless you have experienced it yourself.”

—Lorna Byrne, Angels in My Hair p186) Angels in My Hair: The True Story of a Modern-Day Irish Mystic

“Archangel Michael heard my thoughts and said, ‘Jesus came from God and is part of God. Like the soul of every man, woman and child. God wants every soul to come back to Him because every soul is part of God; that spark of light.’ I understood that what I was seeing – and what I am able as a result to tell you is helping us all to allow our souls to come forward. All our souls understand this. Jesus was giving his life so we would be able to allow our souls to come forward and allow that intertwining of soul and body to proceed. At the point of death, the intertwining of Jesus’s soul and body produced an explosion of power and an immense flow of love that is still touching us today.”
