Mikao Usui

Mikao Usui, born on August 15, 1865, in the village of Taniai in the Gifu Prefecture of Japan, is renowned as the founder of the Reiki healing system. Usui's early life was steeped in traditional Japanese culture and Buddhist education, which laid the foundation for his spiritual pursuits. He was a versatile scholar, studying a wide range of subjects including history, medicine, Buddhism, Christianity, psychology, and Taoism. His travels to Europe, America, and China further broadened his understanding of spiritual and healing practices. Despite his extensive studies, Usui remained unsatisfied with the answers he found, which propelled him towards a deeper spiritual quest.

The turning point in Usui's life came during a 21-day retreat on Mount Kurama, a sacred mountain near Kyoto. During this retreat, he engaged in fasting, meditation, and prayer, seeking enlightenment and a deeper understanding of spiritual healing. On the 21st day, Usui experienced a profound spiritual awakening, described as a powerful surge of energy entering the crown of his head and filling his entire being with light. This experience not only provided him with a special healing ability but also deep insights into the principles of healing and living a balanced life. Following this enlightenment, Usui discovered that he could channel a universal life force energy through his hands, which he later named Reiki.

Usui's newfound healing abilities led him to establish the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai in Tokyo in 1922, where he began teaching Reiki to thousands of students. His teachings emphasized the Five Reiki Principles: do not worry, do not anger, work honestly, be grateful, and be kind to all living things. These principles serve as spiritual guidelines for living a balanced and harmonious life. Usui's respect for the healing methods of Jesus Christ also influenced his practice, as he sought to understand and integrate these methods into Reiki. By the time of his death on March 9, 1926, Usui had taught Reiki to over 2,000 students and trained 20 Reiki teachers, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of spiritual healing.

About Mikao Usui’s Quotation [Commentary]

Mikao Usui’s quote, “The secret art of inviting happiness. The miraculous medicine of all diseases. Just for today, do not anger. Do not worry and be filled with gratitude. Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people,” captures the essence of his teachings on Reiki. Usui viewed Reiki not only as a method of physical healing but also as a path to emotional and spiritual well-being. The phrase “secret art of inviting happiness” highlights the transformative power of Reiki, which, according to Usui, can bring profound joy and contentment into one’s life. By addressing the root causes of distress and imbalance, Reiki promotes holistic healing that encompasses the mind, body, and spirit.

In the context of the Five Reiki Principles, Usui’s teachings emphasize mindfulness and ethical living as essential components of healing. The directive “Just for today, do not anger. Do not worry and be filled with gratitude” encourages practitioners to cultivate a state of inner peace and gratitude, which are crucial for both personal well-being and effective healing practice. By advising individuals to focus on the present moment and release negative emotions, Usui underscores the importance of mental and emotional health in the healing process. This daily practice of mindfulness and gratitude serves as a foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life.

Furthermore, Usui’s advice to “Devote yourself to your work. Be kind to people” highlights the importance of dedication and compassion in the path of healing. By encouraging practitioners to commit to their work and treat others with kindness, Usui reinforces the idea that personal and communal well-being are interconnected. The practice of Reiki is not only about individual healing but also about fostering a compassionate and supportive community. Through consistent practice and a focus on positive principles, Reiki practitioners can enhance their own spiritual growth and contribute to the healing of others, embodying the true essence of Usui’s teachings.
