Socrates, in Plato, Apology 42

Socrates (c. 470 BC – 399 BC) was a classical Greek (Athenian) philosopher credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy. Through his portrayal in Plato’s dialogues, Socrates has become renowned for his contribution to the field of ethics, and it is this Platonic Socrates who lends his name to the concepts of Socratic irony and the Socratic method.

Additional Socrates Quotations

“If the soul is really immortal, what care should be taken of her, not only in respect of the portion of time which is called life, but of eternity!”

―Socrates [speaking in Plato’s Phaedo].

“To fear death, gentlemen, is no other than to think oneself wise when one is not, to think one knows what one does not know. No one knows whether death may not be the greatest of all blessings for a man, yet men fear it as if they knew that it is the greatest of evils. And surely it is the most blameworthy ignorance to believe that one knows what one does not know.”

―Socrates [in Plato (Apology 29)].
