Death Is Like Birth

Topic: Life Beyond Death & the Spirit World

Your soul is perfect; when your soul is free of your body it can travel through the universe to places you could never even imagine. How can I help you to understand how wonderful this feeling is? There is no way to express it; no way to tell you, unless you have experienced it yourself.
“Death is like birth; I know you might think that’s a strange thing to say, but you are being born into a new life. You actually don’t ‘die’, it’s only this physical shell that you leave – like an empty egg shell.

Lorna Byrne

Lorna Byrne, born on March 25, 1953, in Dublin, Ireland, is a spiritual teacher and bestselling author known for her lifelong ability to see and communicate with angels. Growing up in Kilmainham and Ballymun, she faced challenges such as financial hardships and severe dyslexia, which made traditional learning difficult. Despite these obstacles, her vivid angelic encounters shaped her unique spiritual perspective, even as they set her apart from her community. These early experiences became the basis for the spiritual insights she later shared with a global audience.

In 1976, Byrne married Joe, a relationship she believed was divinely guided. They lived near Maynooth, County Kildare, and had four children. After Joe’s passing in 2000, Byrne felt called to share her connection with the angelic realm through her writing. Her first book, Angels in My Hair, became a bestseller, followed by others like A Message of Hope from the Angels. Written with the aid of speech recognition software, her works have been translated into over 30 languages, reaching readers in more than 50 countries with messages of love and guidance.

Today, Byrne continues her spiritual and philanthropic work, including founding the Lorna Byrne Children’s Foundation to support charities for children in need. Her retreat center, Sanctuary, in Kilfane Demesne, Ireland, promotes mindfulness and interfaith dialogue. Named one of the 100 Most Spiritually Influential Living People in the World, Byrne inspires many through her books, teachings, and commitment to fostering peace and unity.

Theme: Life Beyond Death

About This Lorna Byrne Quotation [Commentary]

Lorna Byrne writes, “Death is like birth; I know you might think that’s a strange thing to say, but you are being born into a new life.” She is not comparing death to an ending but to a beginning. The soul, she says, does not “die”—it leaves behind the physical shell, “like an empty egg shell.” In this transition, something essential is released. For Byrne, what moves on is not diminished, but whole: “Your soul is perfect.” The movement from this life to the next is not a fall into absence but an arrival into presence.

This new life is marked by freedom. “When your soul is free of your body it can travel through the universe to places you could never even imagine.” The soul is no longer limited by the physical world. Byrne acknowledges the difficulty of communicating what this feels like: “How can I help you to understand how wonderful this feeling is? There is no way to express it; no way to tell you, unless you have experienced it yourself.” Even with that, she makes the effort to describe its release, its movement, and its joy. The soul’s journey is real, even if words cannot fully describe it.

Many people fear death, but Byrne offers calm reassurance: “At the moment of death there is no pain, no discomfort.” In her view, what appears to be an ending is a passage—one that reveals, not erases. The soul remains what it always was: perfect, radiant, and whole. Death is not abandonment or loss, but a return to what cannot be broken. Byrne’s words hold gently to one truth: “You are being born into a new life.”
